MEDIA RELEASE
Federal Member for Whitlam Carol Berry has welcomed the establishment of the new Network of Women in Parliament (NOW), saying the initiative comes at an important time for Australian democracy.
On November 24th, women from across the political spectrum will come together to launch the Network of Women in Parliament.
The purpose of NOW is to create an environment where women in Parliament can share experiences, support and learn from each other.
Ms Berry said the establishment of NOW recognises that women in public life often face shared challenges, regardless of political affiliation.
"I want to acknowledge the leadership of Minister for Women Katy Gallagher and the many women across Parliament who have worked to build a safer, more respectful and more inclusive parliamentary culture.
"The launch of this network is another step towards ensuring women are supported and encouraged to participate in public life."
Speaking in Parliament following the attack on Dr Helen Haines MP, Ms Berry said respectful debate and peaceful disagreement were fundamental to Australia's democracy.
"No-one in public life should have to fear for their safety while serving their community.
"No disagreement, grievance or political difference can ever justify violence.
"In recent days, Australians have seen Members and Senators from every political party and every part of the Parliament come together to support Helen, Phil and their family.
"That spirit of unity demonstrates that while our political views may differ, we share a common commitment to serving our communities and strengthening our democracy."
Ms Berry said a national conversation has emerged from last week’s incident about how Australians treat one another and the values that unite us.
"I have spoken about the need for a national conversation about respect and the increasing levels of aggression and abuse that many people are experiencing in public life and in their workplaces.
"This conversation is not only about politicians. It is about teachers, nurses, paramedics, retail workers, hospitality staff and every Australian who deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.”
The inaugural Network of Women in Parliament event will also raise funds for Save the Children, Helen Haines' chosen charity, as a demonstration of support for Helen and her family.
