[START]

PENNY BURFITT, HOST: Federal member for Whitlam, Carol Berry, has welcomed the protection of three areas of volcanic shrubland in the Illawarra under national environmental law. The areas in Albion Park and Dunmore have been listed as critically endangered following a decision by Environment Minister Murray Watt. Ms Berry says the listing builds on existing state environmental protections and will complement conservation efforts for endangered species who live there.

CAROL BERRY MP: Like the southern bandicoot and also the gang cockatoo. So these are important native species which rely on this particular shrub land so it's important that we've listed it under national environmental law.
